Growing citrus in the lowcountry can be a rewarding experience. There are several varieties that do well here, and depending on where you live, some can be grown in the ground versus containers.
Water:
When watering citrus, we recommend erring on the dry side. If a citrus plant stays too wet, both the plant's health and the fruit production can be adversely affected. Water thoroughly and let the soil dry out between waterings.
Fertilize:
Fertilization is extremely important! We recommend Espoma Citrus Tone. It is safe and completely organic fertilizer. Fertilizing can be done at least 3x a year in March - September. If your plant is in a container, you may fertilize more often.
Winter Protection:
A heavy frost or 32-degrees or below can injure foliage and flowers. If citrus is in a container, your plant can be protected by placing the container close to your house and under cover of a porch or covered frost cloth. Plants will climate with age.
