October Zone 9 Checklist

General: 

□ Continue to water regularly

□ Continue to deadhead spent flowers on annuals and perennials

□ Continue to ensure beds are edged, well mulched and weeded

□ Edge all beds and borders for a tidy appearance 

Plant: 

□ Trees and shrubs

□ Cool weather annuals and perennials such as mums, lemon cypress, cyclamen

□ Cool weather herbs such as dill, parsley, basil, and cilantro

□ Replace warm seasonal annuals with cool season annuals in containers

□ Plant paperwhite bulbs in containers to force in time for holidays

□ Plant the backbone of your landscape with large shrubbery and trees. Add sweetgrass and camellias for seasonal color.

□ Plant window boxes and containers to give time to grow in for the holidays.


Prune: 

□ No pruning should be done in October

 

Fertilize: 

□ Bedding plants after planting, particularly pansies

□ Use Bio-Tone Starter with every new planting to help the plant become established in the ground.
□ Continue using organic fertilizers per directions on the bag.
□ Do not fertilize lawn grass
